Aboriginal Arts and Crafts
There are many shops selling Aboriginal items in North Queensland,
although most of the goods come from arts and crafts people living
in Central Australia. Try to avoid mass produced items and look
for goods which come from local sources, so that you can be sure
of supporting local indigenous talent. Obviously buy what you like,
but ask questions about the origins of the goods and try to shop
at places that have direct links with Aboriginal communities or
individuals. Popular goods include didgeridoos, baskets, boomerangs,
and shields. Aboriginal artwork, particularly paintings, has become
very popular in recent years and buyers should familiarize themselves
with prices in a number of galleries to ensure they are getting
a fair deal.
